Woody Allen on Soon-yi and his new movie Irrational Man - NEWS.com.au

EVEN after 23 years of marriage to South Korean-born Soon-yi Previn, Woody Allen would rather die than visit his significant other’s homeland.

“Soon-yi is dying to go to Seoul. She’s been on at me for years but I don’t really want to go,” Allen says, shrugging his shoulders. “I’ve spent years fobbing her off, saying, ‘Let’s go to Paris, let’s go to Barcelona.’ She’s now at the point of saying, ‘Enough Paris! Enough Barcelona! You’re going to be 80 years old in December; you’ll be dead soon and I’d like to go to Seoul!’ He deadpans. “So, I’m stalling as long as I can; maybe if I’m lucky I’ll be dead.”

Mortality is a recurring theme in the work of this iconic director-writer-actor, from as far back as Love and Death (1975) to his current upcoming movie, Irrational Man, a dark comedy in which an alcoholic philosophy professor (Joaquin Phoenix) plans the perfect murder. Surprisingly though, Allen seems unfazed at the prospect of turning 80.

“I have always been obsessed with mortality, since I was five years old. There’s not a big change between age 5 and 85, to me. I was always at death’s door every second. I mean, I was always petrified. I am not planning anything big because I don’t like to do that,” he explains. “There’s a sadness when people get together and drink and celebrate and there’s a great exchange of insincerities all over the place,” he says. “It’s just not for me. I’ll be very happy to go with my family to a restaurant and have a quiet dinner. It’s the same thing New Year’s Eve. I’d prefer to sleep through it and not get involved.”

His family is happily intact, though if there was ever a marriage destined to fail it was the Allen-Previn union. Born out of controversy (Soon-yi was the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow, Allen’s then-girlfriend of 10-plus years and the leading lady in 13 of his films), the relationship came to light when Farrow found nude photos of Soon-yi in Allen’s apartment.

At age 44, Soon-yi is 35 years younger yet, against the odds, the couple is still going strong and raising their two adopted daughters: Bechet, born in 1999 in China, and Manzie, born in 2000, in Texas.

He smiles. “Soon-yi is fine, she’s great. She took the kids to see An American in Paris this afternoon on Broadway.”

Irrational Man addresses fate and the random decisions we make in life that can often be the most impactful. “A random moment for me that was very meaningful was when I once threw a New Year’s Party. I got a nice thank you present after the party from Mia Farrow,” he recounts. “She sent me a book and said, ‘It was a lovely party; here is a book you might like.” Randomly, I called to say thanks for the book. I happened to say, ‘Should we have lunch next week?’” He pauses. “And from that, grew a worldwide industry.” (The demise of the Allen-Farrow relationship was one of the most acrimonious in Hollywood history and kept many attorneys employed.)

With the United States already in the middle of the 2016 presidential race, what does Allen make of his former employee, Donald Trump, throwing his hat into the ring?

He chuckles. “Donald Trump was in my movie Celebrity. Actually, he was very good. I think it’s amusing, and I think Donald Trump adds a lot of spice. I am sure everybody will at least watch the debates if he is in it. Otherwise, it’ll be a group of carbon copy, vapid attitudes and everybody saying the same thing. Trump would liven it up.

“But I don’t think he really wants the job. I think he’s flamboyant and he lends a theatrical element.

“Perhaps the eccentricity and arrogance of Trump might make for a good character in one of Allen’s future movies?

“I could make individual jokes about it but it wouldn’t stimulate me enough to write a whole script because the issue is that only right now it’s very hot. Every television program would make hilarious Donald Trump jokes; the mere mention of his name will get a laugh and it would be very commercial. But cut to five years or even two years, it will be old news, unless he gets elected president. But from what it looks like, it will be fun for everybody except the Republicans,” he laughs, “but then it wil l go away and be old news and my movie will look like yesterday’s newspaper.”

Allen has the stamina of a man half his age and remains one of Hollywood’s most prolific directors. What’s his secret? “I’ve been lucky. I have had good health and I’ve remained active, athletic and energetic. It’s genetic, plus there’s the fact that I don’t lead a sedentary life. I exercise and I eat well. I don’t smoke and I don’t have any terrible health-ruining habits, and I enjoy working.”

“If tomorrow I get a stroke and I can’t remember my name, then it’s over. But if my health holds out and if I turn out to be as healthy as my father, actually both my parents lived to be 100, I see no reason why I couldn’t continue to make films. I’ve got a million ideas and I like to write,” he says. “I don’t know what else I would do. I really don’t.”

Jon Stewart signing off 'Daily Show' fake newscast for real - Junior College

Jon Stewart signing off 'Daily Show' fake newscast for real - Junior College

Ahead of his final episode a week from tonight, The Daily Show recently released a compilation video of Stewart answering questions from audience members before the show.

Noah will face his first significant test nearly instantly.

“Let me say this: I have been summoned by a surprisingly wide variety of individuals over the years â€" from tech giants, to financial captains, to Billy Joel”, Stewart said with a smile, before adding, “True!”

“The show still has its voice, but it’s just going in a slightly different direction”, he told reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour.

Then, after “Mad Money” host Jim Cramer booked appearances on CNBC sister networks NBC and MSNBC to rail against Stewart, the “Daily Show” host “responded” with make-believe appearances on other Viacom series, inserting himself into MTV’s “The Hills” and Nickelodeon’s “Dora the Explorer”.

The Daily Show was based on an emerging 24-hour news cycle…

“It’s no longer predicated around 24 hour news”, Noah said of today’s news environment, notes Entertainment Weekly. Half of it is online now. “The way people are drawing their news is sound bites and headlines and click-bait links”.

“That’s how I started and that’s â€" I’m sure that’s how I will end”, he said.

The show won’t change, but he says the perspective can’t help but change. The set will undergo some “tiny” alterations, Noah said, but the entire team of executive producers will remain in place.

Even though Noah has already addressed the tweet controversy that came up shortly after he was named Stewart’s successor, he was still asked about it Thursday. “But you can never control what people find is offensive or not. When people get to know you, and when you know a person, you know the context of a joke”, Noah explained. “Luckily, Comedy Central hasn’t limited me to 140 characters on the show”. According to Stewart, his private discussions with Obama were essentially the same as his public interviews with the president, except that at the White House he was fed “truly the best salmon you’ve ever had”.

Tom Cruise battles evil Syndicate in latest 'Mission' - Boston Herald

Tom Cruise battles evil Syndicate in latest 'Mission' - Boston Herald

With the franchise in its fifth chapter, Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible â€" Rogue Nation” rates as a James Bond wannabe.

Interspersed with spectacular action sequences and exotic locations are a beautiful if deadly female agent, a semi-comprehensible plot and soaring riffs on Lalo Schifrin’s theme music â€" its only connection at this point with the TV series that was its original inspiration.

“Rogue Nation” opens as Ethan Hunt (Cruise) must destroy a military cargo plane in Belarus by jumping on a wing and holding tight. As movie star stuntwork goes, it’s almost ho-hum.

“Rogue” instantly jumps to a London vinyl record shop where Cruise meets a comely clerk in a scene with distinct echoes of Humphrey Bogart’s bookstore quickie with Dorothy Malone in “The Big Sleep.”

Romance is not in the cards here, only a diabolical d eath as Hunt is gassed and captured by the nefarious Syndicate kingpin Solomon Lane (Sean Harris).

Hunt awakes, bound and stripped to the waist, to be tortured as he meets his nemesis â€" or is she his savior? â€" Sweden’s Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, who may or may not be a double agent.

Meanwhile back in D.C., the Impossible Mission Force, represented by Jeremy Renner’s Brandt, is being grilled by CIA chief Alan Hunley (a portentously jowly Alec Baldwin), who mocks the IMF for its pursuit of the phantom Syndicate. He doesn’t believe Lane’s evil global enterprise actually exists and gets the IMF shut down.

The action switches to Vienna’s Opera House for a live performance, with Hunt’s comic relief tech whiz Benji (Simon Pegg) present.

Again co-writer/director Christopher McQuarrie (whose “The Usual Suspects” screenplay won him an Oscar) echoes a classic Hollywood thriller: The Albert Hall sequence in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 “ The Man Who Knew Too Much,” in which an assassin’s kill shot will be disguised as cymbals clash.

Only Hunt finds himself backstage tracking not one but three killers. As he scrambles to stop them all with Benji’s help, Ilsa turns up again.

From there the now reassembled IMF team â€" including Ving Rhames’ Luther Stickell â€" goes to Casablanca for a fantastically intricate, literally breathtaking, underwater sequence set in a turbine with a deadly countdown.

Cruise, very fit at 53, gently nods to time’s passing with an all too mortal Hunt. While no match for its brilliant predecessor, the 2011 “Ghost Protocol,” and marred by the occasional dead-air speech about the Syndicate as a global threat, “Rogue Nation” gets its job done with style.

(“Mission: Impossible â€" Rogue Nation” contains sadistic violence and partial nudity.)

Review: 'The End of the Tour' Offers a Tale of Two Davids - New York Times

Review: 'The End of the Tour' Offers a Tale of Two Davids - New York Times

Jason Segel portrays the novelist David Foster Wallace in James Ponsoldt’s new movie. Credit A24

“There’s an unhappy paradox about literary biographies,” David Foster Wallace observed in The New York Times Book Review in 2004, in reference to “Borges: A Life.” Readers who pick up such books, drawn by their admiration for a writer’s work, are likely to find themselves distracted and disappointed by a welter of iffy theories and picayune data. In the case of Borges, Wallace argued, “the stories so completely transcend their motive cause that the biographical facts become, in the deepest and most literal way, irrelevant.”

The same can be said of Wallace himself, and, for that matter, of just about any author worth reading. The work is everything; the life is trivia. And since I’m about to praise a movie about David Foster Wallace that claims fidelity to at least some of the facts of his life, I should perhaps identify myself as a devoted nonconsumer of literary biographies, an avowed biopic skeptic and, unless someone offers me a lot of money to write one, a habitual avoider of celebrity profiles. So by all rights I should hate “The End of the Tour,” James Ponsoldt’s new film, a portrait of the writer that has its origins in a (never-published) magazine profile. In fact, I love it.

Anatomy of a Scene | ‘End of the Tour’

The director James Ponsoldt discusses a sequence from his film “The End of the Tour,” featuring Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel and opening July 31.

By Mekado Murphy on Publish Date July 23, 2015. Photo by A24. Watch in Times Video »

Some of the people closest to Wallace, who committed suicide in 2008, have condemned the movie sight unseen, and friends of his who did see it (one of them also a friend of mine) have found fault with both its details and its overall design. As an ardent, ambivalent reader of Wallace’s prose and a complete stranger to him personally, I can only respect such objections. But the movie, in my view, disarms them â€" not because it offers an especially loving or lifelike picture of its subject but rather because David Foster Wallace is not really its subject at all. “The End of the Tour” is at once an exercise in post-postmodern literary mythmaking and an unsparing demolition of the contemporary mythology of the writer. It’s ultimately a movie â€" one of the most rigorous and thoughtful I’ve seen â€" about the ethical and existential traps our fame-crazed culture sets for the talent ed and the mediocre alike.

There are two Davids in the movie, which takes place in 1996. Both of them are writers. One is Wallace (Jason Segel), whose third book of fiction, the 1,079-page dystopian tennis-rehab epic “Infinite Jest,” has just been published to hyperbolic acclaim. The other is David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg), whose own recently released novel, “The Art Fair,” has met with polite indifference. An early scene finds him on his couch reading “Infinite Jest” while his girlfriend, Sarah (Anna Chlumsky), is curled up with the season’s other fictional blockbuster, the anonymously published political roman à clef “Primary Colors.” (Oh, the ’90s. Sorry you missed all the fun, kids. Kind of sorry I didn’t.)

David L., a new, probationary hire at Rolling Stone magazine, convinces his skeptical editor (Ron Livingston) that David F.W. is worthy of a feature article, and so finds himself in Bloomington, Ill., in the middle of winter. (Wallace taught for many years at Illinois State University.) The plan is that the reporter will accompany the novelist to Minneapolis, the last stop on his book tour. He does, and that’s pretty much the plot of the movie.

Mr. Ponsoldt, whose earlier features include “The Spectacular Now” and “Smashed,” would much rather observe two people in aimless conversation than usher them through the tollbooths of narrative convention. And conversation, including the uncomfortable silences that punctuate it, is pretty much the entire substance of “The End of the Tour.” Yes, there’s a fair amount of smoking and junk-food eating, an excursion to the Mall of America and a multiplex showing of “Broken Arrow” (with John Travolta taking a missile to the gut), but Mr. Ponsoldt and the screenwriter, the playwright Donald Margulies, allow words to speak louder than actions.

Many of the words are Wallace’s own, uttered into Mr. Lipsky’s tape recorder in 1996 and transcribed, 14 years later, for publication in a book called “Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself.” Fun ny, intriguing and revealing as this talk may be, it does not have anything like the status of Wallace’s writing. The film not only acknowledges this distinction, but it also insists on it. In his would-be profiler’s company, occasionally glancing at the menacing red light of the predigital tape recorder, Wallace is by turns cagey and candid, witty and earnest, but he is always aware, at times painfully, that he is playing the role of a writer in someone else’s fantasy. Actually writing is something he does when no one else is around.

Movie Review: ‘The End of the Tour’

The Times critic A.O. Scott reviews “The End of Tour.”

By SOFIA PERPETUA and ROBIN LINDSAY on Publish Date July 30, 2015. Photo by A24 Films, via Associated Press. Watch in Times Video »

Mr. Segel’s performance, whether it captures the true Wallace or not, is sharp and sensitive, in no small part because it’s modest and appropriately evasive. The essential David Wallace is precisely what the film reminds us we can’t see, even as David Lipsky wants desperately to track him down and display him to the readers of Rolling Stone. Wallace is caught in a familiar set of contradictions. He wants attention but craves solitude. He’s willing to collaborate with the machinery of publicity even as he worries about the phoniness of it all. He’s ambitious and eager to protect himself from the consequences of his ambition. In short, he’s a famous writer.

As such he is, for his short-term companion, both alpha dog and prey, an object of envy as well as admiration, a meal ticket and an imaginary friend. The fil m poses the question “Who is the real David Foster Wallace?” as a feint. He is its premise, its axiom, its great white whale. The more relevant question, the moral problem on which the movie turns, is “who is David Lipsky?”

In real life, David Lipsky might be a great guy, but on screen he is played by Mr. Eisenberg, which means that his genetic material is at least 25 percent weasel. Wallace at one point playfully describes himself as “pleasantly unpleasant.” Lipsky is unpleasantly pleasant, which is much worse. Twitchy and ingratiating, he wants to be a tough journalist and a pal. He desperately wants Wallace to regard him as a peer and can hardly contain his jealousy. He berates Sarah after she chats with Wallace on the phone and falls into a defensive snit after Wallace accuses him of flirting with Betsy (Mickey Sumner), a poet who had known Wallace in graduate school.

His awfulness is, to some degree, structural. A profile writer, especially in the company of another writer, is a false friend who dreams of being a secret sharer. Lipsky’s assignment is to pry, distort and betray, to use Wallace’s words and the details of his existence as material for his own dubious project. Wallace knows this and acquiesces to it â€" “you agreed to the interview” is Lipsky’s fallback when his subject gets prickly â€" and generally handles himself with grace and forbearance.

You may find yourself wishing that he didn’t have to, which is to say wishing that “The End of the Tour” didn’t exist even as you hang on its every word and revel in its rough, vernacular beauty. In an ideal world, we would all sit at home reading “Infinite Jest” and then go out to eat hamburgers, argue about philosophy and watch cheesy action blockbust ers. There would be no pseudo-authoritative biographies or prying, preening magazine profiles to complicate our pleasures, and ambitious actors would not dare to impersonate beloved novelists. But the world we live in is plagued by all of those things. There will always be films about writers and writing, and this one is just about as good as it gets.

“The End of the Tour” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). Language. So much language.

A Hater Converted! Learn What Made Lena Dunham Love to Run - Rapid News Network

However, in an Instagram post published on Wednesday, the 29-year-old shared a paparazzi pic of the actress getting her sweat on, and she has not an ounce of shame about it! And while she’s no fan of unsolicited photos, the actress wanted to share the pride she felt on seeing the snap, not least because running used to be something she could hardly bear to do.

“Not usually one to post a paparazzi shot but this fills me with pride”, she began in her lengthy caption. In her caption, she explained that she has always hated running, saying it was an “embarrassing” activity and she did not trust herself to “even move briskly towards a buffet”.

Admitting she felt self-conscious at the New Jersey Swift gig, Lena told Billboard: ‘I was so thrilled to support my friend and so displeased to learn about the truth of my own height. She added that she had no plans to embrace “that triathlon life” but that it is “a true joy” to become more connected to her body and “its powers”.

Dunham has been outspoken recently about her efforts to “move for your mind” â€" an initiative to raise awareness of the importance of exercise in regards to her mental health. “(Extra motivation provided by @manrepeller for @outdoorvoices) #moveforyourmind”.

We absolutely love Lena’s message and we hope girls and boys will adopt healthy exercise into their daily routine!

And the picture shows exactly that: Dunham looks incredibly strong, swift and proud as she pounds the crowded NYC pavement.

And this isn’t the first time Dunham’s been open about how exercising has had a positive influence on her life.

‘I’ve been feeling pretty tall, feeling pretty sturdy, and it was incredible to me, like, “Oh, I’m not tall, I’m chubby”. “But I mean, on most days, I feel really great and fine about my body, but I don’t think standing next to, like, three supermodels or so is anything even the most confident woman needs to do”, she admitted. “But the minute I caught sight of myself in the Jumobtron, I knew something was very wrong”.

Now that Lupita Nyong'o can cross "star in a blockbuster franchise" off the list with her role in the upcoming  Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Oscar winner is opting for something more low-key.

The 32-year-old beauty will star in Public Theater's Off-Broadway production of Eclipsed. The play is written by Danai Gurira, who TV fans know as samurai sword-wielding Michonne on The Walking Dead.

Nyong'o will make her New York stage debut in the production, which is also the play's NYC premiere.

Eclipsed is set during the Liberian Civil War and follows the captive wives of a rebel officer.

"Danai Gurira has written a brilliant play, ripped from the headlines, that looks at the terrible conflicts in post-colonial Africa with an eye that is both incisive and deeply compassionate," Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis said in a statement. "A feminist reading of the Liberian Civil War, a war that was ended by women, Eclipsed is both heart-breaking and profoundly life-affirming. We are delighted to welcome the extraordinary Lupita Nyong'o to The Public in this vitally important play."

Eclipsed will begin previews Sept. 29, and opening night is Oct. 14.

Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond have committed to three series of the show with broadcaster Amazon Prime.

The first will be broadcast in 2016, Amazon said.

Clarkson said moving to Amazon's streaming service felt "like I've climbed out of a biplane and into a spaceship".

Clarkson was fired in March after he punched a producer during an off-set altercation.

The show's two other hosts also left.

Top Gear has won a huge global following with its mix of car tips, driving stunts and jokey banter.

The BBC says the show will continue with new hosts.

Judge: Sale of convent to Katy Perry likely invalid - Fox News

Judge: Sale of convent to Katy Perry likely invalid - Fox News

A judge said Thursday he believes a group of elderly nuns improperly sold their hilltop convent to a businesswoman but delayed any efforts by church officials to finalize a competing sale to pop singer Katy Perry.

Thursday's mixed ruling by Superior Court Judge James C. Chalfant will tie up the once-lavish estate in months of litigation. While the judge preliminarily ruled that entrepreneur Dana Hollister's purchase of the convent is invalid, he ordered her to pay $25,000 a month to support the nuns and denied representatives for Los Angeles' Catholic archbishop or Perry access to the convent during the dispute.

"There is no doubt in my mind sale to defendant Hollister was improper and invalid," Chalfant said.

Hollister has plans to turn the convent into a boutique hotel and restaurant, while Perry would transform it into a private home.

The Roman villa-style convent sits on eight acres atop a hill in the Los Feliz neighborhood near Hollywood. The order of nuns that has owned the property for more than 40 years hastily sold it to Hollister in June, bypassing approval from Los Angeles' archbishop.

Archbishop Jose H. Gomez wants to sell the convent to Perry, but the sale cannot go forward because Hollister has already registered a deed for the property. Chalfant said it will take months, if not years, to resolve the dispute between the Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the archbishop.

"You're not selling to Katy Perry anytime soon," Chalfant told the archbishop's lawyers.

The archdiocese and nuns agree the property, which was bestowed to the sisters by a devout Catholic who wanted them to keep him in their prayers, should be sold. The two sides are fighting over the control of the sale's proceeds and whether Perry or Hollister are suitable buyers.

The "Roar" singer, whose parents are protestant ministers, has agreed to pay $14.5 million for the convent and to relocate an adjoining house of prayer used by priests. Hollister has agreed to pay $15.5 million, with $5.5 million dedicated to relocating the prayer house.

In May, at the archbishop's request, the nuns met with Perry to see if a compromise could be worked out. At least two of the five surviving nuns â€" who had already searched for Perry's music videos and weren't pleased with what they saw â€" continue to oppose the singer purchasing the convent.

Chalfant ruled that church law governs the sale of the convent, not civil law. He ordered Hollister to remove any armed guards from the property and set a hearing for Sept. 15 on whether she will be able to retain possession of the convent.

Archdiocese lawyers want Hollister removed and said Thursday that Perry has agreed to pay rent on the convent while the case is litigated.

A lawyer for the sisters argued it was unfair to use canon law to decide the issue because civil laws should govern the sale.

Chalfant noted that the nuns did not properly follow their own procedures when they agreed to sell the convent to Hollister in June.

"This is a problem for the sisters because they don't trust the archdiocese," Chalfant said.

Hollister attended the hearing, sitting in the second row next to a pair of the nuns, one of whom listened to Chalfant describe his ruling with her hand over her mouth.

Perry did not attend the hearing, but her lawyer watched the proceedings.

Hollister was already cleaning and restoring the convent, but stopped the project after she was sued by the archbishop.

Perry's bid to purchase the convent still requires the Vatican's approval.

HBO will air Paris concert and documentary on U2 world tour - Los Angeles Times

The Paris stop on U2's current Innocence + Experience tour will air Nov. 14 on HBO, the premium cable network announced Thursday.

The performance at the Bercy Arena will air in the U.S. on the same day in prime time. A week earlier, on Nov. 7, HBO will premiere a behind-the-scenes documentary special that follows the band as it conceived and developed the current tour, which began in May and runs through the end of November.

The special will also chronicle U2's preparation and rehearsals for the tour, including the challenges posed by front man Bono's recovery from a fall 2014 bicycle accident in New York.

Davis Guggenheim, 2006 Oscar winner for the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," will direct the special.

Before the current tour, U2 had not played arenas since 2006. The Innocence + Experience show is designed for large venues, using multiple stages and an interactive floor-to-ceiling LED screen. Interviews in the documentary include all four members of U2, Willie Williams, who has created tour concepts for the band for more than 30 years, and designer Es Devlin, who signed on for the current tour.

Both the special and the concert will be available on streaming services HBO GO and HBO NOW, simultaneous to the programs’ world premieres on HBO.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation Review Roundup: Tom Cruise "Fires Up ... - E! Online

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation Review Roundup: Tom Cruise "Fires Up ... - E! Online

[embedded content]

Tom Cruise has done the impossible.

Mission: Impossible â€" Rogue Nation, the fifth film in the $2 billion franchise, doesn't feature dinosaurs, superheroes or even Minions (that we know of, anyway), and yet, it seems to be on track to become one of this summer's biggest box office draws.

Picking up where 2011's Mission: Impossible â€" Ghost Protocol left off, the IMF has disbanded and Ethan Hunt (Cruise) is determined to infiltrate The Syndicate, a network of highly skilled special agents who are responsible for a series of terrorist attacks. To do so, Ethan gathers his old team and joins forces with a disavowed British agent, Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), whose allegiance is in question.

In addition to Cruise and Ferguson, the 131-minute action film features familiar and new faces, including Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley; Sean Harris as Solomon Lane; Tom Hollander as the Prime Minister; Jens Hultén as the "Bone Doctor"; Simon McBurney as Attlee; Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn; Jeremy Renner as William Brandt; and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell. Christopher McQuarrie directed the movie, which is rated PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, and brief partial nudity.

And, per usual, the stunts are mind-blowing.

Here's what critics think of Paramount Pictures' Mission: Impossible â€" Rogue Nation:

• "Thanks to a sharp script that springs a real surprise or two and a pace that never slackens, Mission: Impossible â€" Rogue Nation rates as the second-best of the numerous franchise titles of the summer, after Mad Max: Fury Road," The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy writes, noting that McQuarrie "doesn't change the prescription for what makes this franchise so successful, nor does he have the most practiced hand among the series' directors at milking the big action sequences for all they're worth." That said, he has "deepened the dramatic involvement by so thoroughly casting Ethan Hunt to the wolves that he's a man without a country or a reliable partnerâ€"which is why he's forced to believe that Ilsa will stand with him at the end of the day despite much circumstantial evidence to the contrary." Pegg gets "a few moments to shine, Ferguson shines and Cruise "looks great, acts with unassuming confidence without needing t o ingratiate and credibly conquers innumerable physical challenges."

VIDEO: How Tom Cruise got ripped for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATIONPARAMOUNT PICTURES

• "If Rogue Nation falls slightly below Ghost Protocol on the adrenaline scale, this fifth entry in the spy saga is definitely the sort of over-the-top spree that generates goofy grins, clenched armrests and spilled soda," The Wrap's Alonso Duralde writes, adding, "Rogue Nation doesn't do anything particularly wrong inasmuch as it overdoes something rightâ€"by the time we reach the final chase/shoot-out/hand-to-hand combat set piece, a bit of ice-cream-headache fatigue has begun to set in." He notes that McQuarrie "skillfully assembles each of these sequences, but the film might have benefited from excising at least one of them." Ferguson in particular "makes for a captivating screen presence." The movie "never pretends to be anything but a solidly entertaining collection of fighting, chasing, driving, falling and going-to-the-place-and-getting-the-thing. But at that level, it delivers completely. Choose to accept it."

• Entertainment Weekly's Chris Nashawaty notes that the Mission: Impossible movies "have become synonymous with its star's fearless, adrenalin-rush stunts," and McQuarrie "understands that Cruise's signature without-a-net show-stopper is what we're all primed for." In fact, the director opens the film "with its biggest money shot, as Cruise sprints and leaps onto the wing of a Russian cargo plane speeding down a Minsk runway and proceeds to cling by his fingernails onto its side after it's taken flight." Compared to its predecessors, Mission: Impassable â€" Rogue Nation holds up. Nashawaty admits it "may not be the best, the tightest, or even the most logically coherent M:I flick, but there should be more movies like it: relentlessly thrilling, smart entertainments for folks who can't tell the difference between Quicksilver and The Flashâ€"and aren't particularly interested in trying to learn the d ifference either." Furthermore, he writes, "Like all Mission: Impossible films (of which there's yet to be a dud), it's not so much about the outcome as it is the breathlessly thrilling journey Cruise takes us on to get there."

• Calling the film "unusually spry and satisfying," Variety's Justin Chang says Cruise "continues to throw himself into harm's way with energy, conviction and an astonishing disregard for life and limb." Praising Quarrie's contributions, he adds, "While the Mission: Impossible movies have employed a different helmer with each new installment, this is, notably, the first one to be directed and solely written by the same filmmakerâ€"which may explain why, even at a pacey, slightly trimmable 131 minutes, Rogue Nation feels like the most dramatically sustained and conceptually unified picture in the series."

NEWS: Is Tom Cruise interested in Top Gun 2?

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATIONPARAMOUNT PICTURES

• McQuarrie first directed Cruise in 2012's Jack Reacher, Rolling Stone's Peter Travers recalls, and because he "has never worked on this huge a scale, the strain to go big and bigger sometimes shows." Even so, he admits, the director brings an "indie sensibility" to the "usual Hollywood FX." Mission: Impossible â€" Rogue Nation "doesn't skimp on the wow factor, especially a Moroccan motorcycle chase and an underwater sequence that has Ethan whooshing around like a sock during spin cycle," Travers writes. "And the laughs kick in whenever Ethan gets help from his miracle-working teammates Benji and Luther." Though "action trumps logic" at times, the movie "succeeds best when McQuarrie channels his inner film geek and stages a spectacular shootout at the Vienna opera house that evokes Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much. This knockout sequence, in which Cruise fires up everything he has as actor and athlete, shows t hat Mission: Impossible still has gas in its tank even when its engine sputters."

NEWS: Why Tom Cruise halted production on Mission: Impossible â€" Rogue Nation

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATIONPARAMOUNT PICTURES

• "Tom Cruise is now 53. He has no business hanging on the side of an airplane as it ascends. Yet there he is in the opening sequence, as game as ever. His inexhaustible drive helps propel this consistently excitingâ€"if familiarâ€"installment," Us Weekly's Mara Reinstein notes. Regarding Ethan's team, she says, "This group isn't going to sit in a room and talk strategy. They chase, they shoot, they hack, they do that cool neck-snap-with-the-legs move...It all goes by in a whirl, though, and there's a good chance it will dissipate from memory as quickly as that message self-destructs. Please, Cruise, light a new fuse soon!"

• "Cruise seems to have given up on trying to convince us that he's a ladies' man and with the female lead...he shares no moment sexier than a warm hug of the quality you'd give your aunt at Thanksgiving," The New York Post's Kyle Smith writes. He adds that Mission: Impossible â€" Rogue Nation is "the kind of movie where trained assassins with machine guns miss our hero from a distance of five yards, has the occasional semi-rousing moment, but it has neither the wit of the best Bond films nor the grit of any of the Bourne ones. It's a movie that never lives up to the promise of its own theme song."

Mission: Impossible â€" Rogue Nation is in theaters Friday.

Hannibal Buress Asks Beverly Hills Dwellers: 'Who Is Meek Mill?' - RollingStone.com

The beef between Meek Mill and Drake might be the biggest (or second biggest) story in hip-hop now, but as Hannibal Buress proved on Wednesday night's Why, a pair of diss tracks, Twitter jabs and ghostwriting accusations haven't pushed the feud into the general consciousness. To get the true magnitude of the rap beef's reverberations, Buress traveled to the one Los Angeles neighborhood "that you go to talk about hip-hop": Beverly Hills.

During the man-on-the-street segment, Buress asked numerous Beverly Hills denizens, "Who is Meek Mill?" Only one person could identify the rapper, however, mainly because of who Meek Mill is dating. "I think he's sleeping with Nicki Minaj," the responder said, adding that he didn't know any Meek Mill songs.

Drake didn't fare any better as Beverly Hills dwellers were just as clueless about the Toronto rapper, although one woman wondered whether Drake was from Nickelodeon's Drake & Josh fame. As for the ghostwriting allegations, "Everybody steals everything. This is Beverly Hills," one resident said.

Why? also featured a performance by Brooklyn rapper Jean Grae, who teamed with the series' in-house DJ Flying Lotus and producer Terrace Martin to deliver a live rendition of her track "Before the Summer Broke."

"Hannibal asked me to do 'Before The Summer Broke' on Why? I sighed. REALLY hard song for me to perform, so I don't usually. But I did. Tonite," Grae tweeted before the episode aired. "It's hard song to perform. I've only broken on 2 songs. That one and doing 'U&Me' live. Sooo, you know. Watch Why? and see me being weird."

Amsterdam is honoring the artist Vincent Van Gogh with a re-creation of one of his self-portraits â€" made entirely of flowers.

Over 50,000 dahlias were used to make the likeness of the artist, who died on July 29, 1890 â€" 125 years ago on Wednesday â€" when he committed suicide at age 37. The medium is particularly appropriate since flowers were one of Van Gogh's most frequent subjects.

According to a PBS Newshour blog post, the memorial is only one of many tributes to the artist's legacy. Among others is a bike path in Amsterdam that uses creatively arranged lights to simulate "Starry Night," one of the Dutch artist's most famous paintings. And the French village of Auvers-sur-Oise is organizing tours of the sites that inspired his paintings as well as the locations where he spent his final days.

On Wednesday, members of Van Gogh's family laid sunflowers, another famous subject of his, on his grave in Auvers-sur-Oise.

Van Gogh said in 1885 that the world would appreciate his work more after he was dead. He turned out to be correct, and the events on the 125th anniversary of his death have been organized by Van Gogh Brabant under the theme "125 Years on Inspiration" to ensure that his creative legacy continues to be remembered and celebrated.

Ben Affleck is not really dating Christine Ouzounian.

One month after announcing the end of his 10-year marriage to Jennifer Garner, a tabloid has claimed that the Oscar winner, 42, is seeing Christine, 28, a woman he and Jennifer, 43, hired as a nanny for their three childrenâ€"Violet Affleck, 9, Seraphina Affleck, 6, and Samuel Affleck, 3â€"earlier this spring. "They would hang out without the kids," a friend of Christine's alleged. "And they were very flirty."

According to the magazine, Jennifer recently fired Christine.

However, the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star's rep tells E! News that the Ben and Christine romance "story is not true," adding, "It's tabloid journalism hiding behind blind sources. It's a shameful ploy to stay relevant for the magazine."

"We are considering legal options," Ben's rep adds.

Ben and Jennifer announced their breakup last month.

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time," the actor told E! News in a joint statement. "This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding."

VIDEO: What is the financial impact of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's split?

The actors, who met on the set of 2001's Pearl Harbor and fell for each other on the set of 2003's Daredevil, sought martial counseling and agreed to a trial separation before deciding to call it quits. "They were a great team as parents, but with each other, they didn't want the same things," a source told E! News in early July. Eventually, the source adde d, Ben and Jennifer realized that "the best thing for them and for the children would be to make a change."

For their children's sake, they are putting on a united front. Jennifer and the kids are staying in a $2 million rental home in Atlanta while she films Miracles From Heaven, while Ben is staying in the guesthouse. And, as E! News previously reported, the actor plans to live on the family's property after they return home.

Ben and Jennifer are also renting L.A. neighbor Brooke Shields' home while they renovate their $17.5 million mansion in California. "It's for convenience sake," a source recently explained to E! News. "They wanted another option."

Khloe Kardashian 'traumatised' by Kris Jenner's lovemaking - TV3.ie

Khloe Kardashian 'traumatised' by Kris Jenner's lovemaking - TV3.ie

28th Jul 15 | Entertainment News

Khloe Kardashian was left ''traumatised'' after hearing her mother Kris Jenner having sex with her younger boyfriend Corey Gamble.

The 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' star was horrified when she and sister Kim Kardashian West went into 57-year-old Kris Jenner's house only to realise she was getting intimate with her 34-year-old boyfriend.

Khloe said: ''Hearing them have sex is wild and I'm traumatised. Kim and I did.

''At her house, thank god. We were downstairs, and we just heard like [claps]. It's really a traumatising thing. And the headboard just going....We were hitting each other like, 'NO!' Kim was like, 'Wait, shh.' And then it was dead silent and then they went again for round two. I was like, 'OK, check please, I'm gone.' ''

And the 31-year-old star admitted it wasn't the first time she had heard her making love, and she even accidentally found herself in the same room as her mother and stepfather Bruce Jenner - who is now known as Caitlyn since undergoing a gender transition - when they were having sex.

She added to Complex magazine: ''That shouldn't happen to anybody, but it's happened to me a few times with my mom. When I was younger, I was hiding under my mom's bed for some reason, and her and Bruce started having sex. I was there and I couldn't leave. I had to stay until it was over.''

While Kris is happy in her relationship with Corey, Khloe thinks it is ''disgusting'' and ''weird''.

She said: ''When I found out she was dating, or even texting back and forth, it was so weird to see her giggly.

''I'm like, 'How do you flirt? Like, what do you guys say?' And it is disgusting. It's awkward.

''Why is a 32 year old, or whatever he is, why is he talking to a 50-fabulous-something woman? That's just -- and I say it to her all the time -- weird.''

Will Smith and Jay-Z are set to team up for a challenging HBO series focusing on the racist murder of Emmett Till which took place in 1955.

The two high profile stars are said to have ‘jumped’ at the chance to work on the project after it was pitched to them by TV producer Aaron Kaplan.

According to Variety, the miniseries, which is expected to run over six hours, is still in its early stages but with Smith involved, it is guaranteed to be an emotional watch.

Smith and Jay-Z previously worked successfully together as producers on the 2014 version of Annie.

Emmett Till murder - what happened?

Emmett was murdered after allegedly flirting with a white woman, Carolyn Bryant, in 1955.

Bryant’s husband Roy and his half brother J.W. Milam took Emmett to a barn, violently beating him and gouging out one of his eyes.

He was then shot in the head before the body was attempted to be concealed in a nearby river. It was discovered some days later.

The killers were acquitted of the murder but later confessed in a magazine interview that they had carried out the killing. They were protected at the time by the double jeopardy law which meant they couldn’t be tried for the same crime again.

One of the most emotional aspects of the horrific crime was Emmett’s mum’s decision to hold a public, open casket funeral so that people could see the level of violence her son had been subjected to.

There are few details currently available on how deep the series will delve in to the case but it will no doubt be an eye-opening and harrowing watch.

Kim Kardashian wants edit option on Twitter - Financial Express

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has written to Twitter officials and made a request to include an edit option on the micro-blogging site.

The 34-year-old pregnant star, who is an avid social media user, said that she had pitched the micro-blogging site a feature that would allow users to edit their messages after they had been posted, reported Us magazine.

“I just emailed Twitter to see if they can add an edit feature so that when you misspell something you don’t have to delete & repost Let’s see,” Kim posted on twitter.

The “Keeping Up With The Kardashian” star immediately captured Twitter’s attention, and within thirty minutes the website’s co-founder Jack Dorsey responded directly to the reality star.

“Great idea! We’re always looking at ways to make things faster and easier,’ he wrote with enthusiasm.

Last month Kim got a lesson in spelling after begging the fashion brand Armani not to discontinue her favourite foundation on Twitter.

After she misspelled the designer’s name as ‘Georgio’ Armani â€" it’s actually spelled Giorgio â€" someone behind the brand’s Twitter account politely corrected her and offered to send some of the much-needed foundation her way.

Hammond police pull plug on Chief Keef hologram appearance - Chicago Sun-Times

Hammond police pull plug on Chief Keef hologram appearance - Chicago Sun-Times

Controversial rapper Chief Keef appeared briefly Saturday night by hologram at a hip-hop concert in Hammond, Indiana, before police shut the concert down and cleared the venue.

Keef appeared even after a concert promoter assured police that Keef would not be showing up in any format. Earlier in the night, Keef’s Twitter account said the hologram appearance would be at a music venue on the North Side of Chicago, which was false.

The controversial rapper appeared by hologram on stage about 10:15 p.m. Saturday at the hip-hop event, Craze Fest, at the Pavilion at Wolf Lake in Hammond, but his song didn’t last for long. Police cut the power, which they vowed to do, if Keef appeared.

Hammond Police Lt. Patrick Vicari expressed his displeasure at the concert promoters.

“Even though I was told no Chief Keef by the promoters, they tried it anyway, so we shut it down. We turned the power off, we’re closing the park down,” Vicari said.

After the shutdown, Keef posted a video on his Instagram account, appearing to show a police officer telling a concertgoer to leave.

“I’d spit hundreds on his broke aâ€"……” according to a comment posted on the video under Keef’s name. Keef’s concert was a part of an effort to raise money for two victims of violence in Chicago.

In an emailed statement from wealthy businessman Alki David, the backer of the Chief Keef benefit concert, David wrote: “Shame on the mayor and police chief of Hammond for shutting down a voice that can create positive change in a community in desperate need. And for taking away money that could have gone to help the victims’ families.  This was a legal event and there was no justification to shut it down besides your glaring disregard for the First Amendment right to free speech. You’ve clearly been bullied by the proud mayor of the Murder Capitol of the U.S., Rahm Emanuel. Mark my words if you censor us you only make us stronger. Plus we’ll be back to sue your aâ€"-.”

Earlier Saturday, Devon Bonaparte,  a promoter with Capital Connect that was behind Craze Fest, told the Sun-Times that Keef was not appearing in any fashion at the Hammond event.

The event was supposed to have a special surprise guest, but Bonaparte said categorically it was not going to be Keef.

Bonaparte said after the concert: “I told everybody that [Chief Keef wasn't performing] because at first we weren’t going to do it. After we talked to the cops, we thought maybe we wouldn’t do it. But at the end of the night, we just thought, hey, let go for it…”

Confusion had reigned earlier Saturday on where Keef would appear for the fundraising concert.

Just before 6 p.m. Saturday, the rapper’s Twitter account announced the concert would be at Lincoln Hall, but that North Side venue shot that down in its own Twitter post, saying the hologram concert wasn’t happening there.

Earlier in the day, on the rapper’s Instagram account, a photo was posted of what appeared to be a stage bearing the logo of HologramUSA being set up at the Pavilion at Wolf Lake with the announcement to “Get your tickets now.” HologramUSA was the Keef concert backer and an Alki David company.

That post, however, was soon taken down.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott said he, too, had been assured that the event would not involve Chief Keef.

The Keef concert was set up as a fundraiser for and in memory of a rapper friend of Keef’s slain in gun violence recently as well as a toddler who died in the aftermath.

HologramUSA had first announced last week that the event would be at the Redmoon Theater, but that event was cancelled. A City of Chicago spokesperson said the city called Redmoon and asked it not to hold the event because Keef is an unacceptable role model and promotes violence.

The Keef concert also drew tough criticism from the Rev. Michael Pfleger, who called upon the rapper to “SHUT UP!!!!!” in a Facebook post.

“Chief Keef has announced that he will hold a benefit concert to raise funds for his friend and the Baby who were killed….REALLY…Chief Keef is one of the reasons we have all this violence…he has been one of the encourager’s of the Violence,” wrote the outspoken pastor who has taken to the pulpit and the streets to fight gun violence.”

Keef had to appear by hologram from California because there is a warrant out for his arrest in Illinois for allegedly not paying child support.

Confusion reigned Saturday over where controversial rapper Chief Keef would be holding his concert by hologram later this evening.

And the confusion apparently starts with the rapper himself.

Just before 6 p.m. Saturday, the rapper’s Twitter account announced the concert would be at Lincoln Hall, but that North Side venue already has listed another concert scheduled for 10 p.m. Saturday. And the official Twitter account of Lincoln Hall stated Saturday night that Keef was not appearing there.

Earlier in the day, on the rapper’s Instagram account, a photo was posted of what appeared to be a stage bearing the logo of HologramUSA being set up at the Pavilion at Wolf Lake in Hammond, Ind., with the announcement to “Get your tickets now.” HologramUSA is the Keef concert organizer.

That post, however, was soon taken down.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott confirmed the venue had been rented out for the night but said he had been assured by the concert promoter that the event will not involve Chief Keef, a statement echoed by a Hammond police lieutenant monitoring the situation.

“If he appears on the stage [by hologram], the police will shut this down,” Hammond Police Lt. Patrick Vicari said.

Devon Bonaparte, the promoter of the Hammond concert, called Craze Fest, told the Sun-Times that Chief Keef is not appearing in any fashion at the Hammond event.

The event will have a special surprise guest, but it is not Chief Keef,  Bonaparte said.

Keef’s manager, Renaldo Hess, declined Saturday night to say where the hologram would appear but said he was looking forward to it.

“This is my first time seeing a hologram. I mean, they’re usually with somebody who’s dead, but I think it’ll be better with somebody that’s alive because its going to be a real image.
I’m excited to see it myself,” Hess said.

The Keef concert was set up as a fundraiser for and in memory of a rapper friend of Keef’s slain in gun violence recently as well as a toddler who died in the aftermath.

HologramUSA had announced last week that the event would be at the Redmoon Theater, but that event was cancelled.

Keef has to appear by hologram from California because there is a warrant out for his arrest in Illinois for allegedly not paying child support.

A spokesperson for HologramUSA could not be reached for comment Saturday.

Kim Kardashian Has a Great Idea for Improving Twitter and It Might Actually Happen - TIME

Kim Kardashian Has a Great Idea for Improving Twitter and It Might Actually Happen - TIME

The true power of celebrity at work

For years, the inability to edit a tweet after it posts has irked users who misspelled a word or messed up a link. Now, it seems, Twitter is thinking about whether to add an edit function after some social media activism from the one and only Kim Kardashian.

The queen of the selfie took to Twitter on Friday night to complain about the problem:

Plenty of people vent about annoyances on Twitter, but when Kim does it, it merits an official response from the platform’s co-founder, Jack Dorsey.

Kim seemed please with the speedy response.

The proposed change sounds like a great idea for bad typists, but also for the future disgraced public figures of America who might now have the chance to act on second thoughts.

Tom Cruise all set to marry Katie Holmes lookalike? - Hindustan Times

If rumours are to be believed, Tom Cruise is all set to tie the knot for the fourth time. The Mission Impossible star is said to be "head over heels" in love with his 22-year-old British personal assistant, Emily Thomas.

Emily has been the 53-year-old Hollywood star's personal assistant since one year for Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, which is releasing on August 7 in India. What has added fuel to the fire is the fact that Emily resembles Tom's third wife, Katie Holmes. Tom and Katie divorced after six years of marriage. The actor was earlier married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman.

Buzz said that Tom has already proposed Thomas and she has accepted the offer to become the fourth Mrs Cruise. Both were in Morocco recently where the star is scouting for locations for a forthcoming film. A source told The Daily Mail, "He always seemed really happy when she was around and incredibly proud to have her by his side."

The actor's spokesman declined to comment on speculation about the star's personal life.
