What makes the show so great is not the focus on storage lockers, but on the interplay, real or exaggerated, by the characters. Dave Hester is a key character.
Without him, the show is just not the same.

All of you guys BOO HOO'ing over Hester being gone are ridiculous. You realize this guy is a total loser and is going broke? His supposed consignment shop in Newport Beach was shut down, and there were huge signs hanging everywhere trashing him and his business. A&E will not risk scrutiny when this guy is clearly ripping people off and doing illegal crap in his business. I say good riddance! The show should center around Barry and his antics and slowly faze out all the others and rename the show. Anyone that is in the auction business knows that this show is runing their trade. They raise the prices of lockers because A&E forks over money to bid on the lockers. Do you really think these people who run a business like consignment stores have thousands of dollars to throw around on lockers? Come on!

A key player is the correct term. It's not the same without him. This fake beef between Darryl and Brandon is too hard to swallow. That's to keep our mind off of Dave's disappearance. I'm really having a tough time watching.
