Also: How can Chris Miller and Phil Lord add one more movie to their to-do list?
Well, what do you know? Even with the departure of Josh Trank, everything might be awesome when it comes to the second Star Wars standalone movie after all.
In fact, the addition of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as directors for the movie is a move that bodes well for the movie in many ways, far beyond simply replacing Trank; given their resume and the news that the feature will focus on the early days ofHan Solo, it almost seems like something that fans would have put on their list of dream projects. The guys that did The Lego Movie, The Last Man on Earth and 21 Jump Street doing a movie about everyone's favorite snarky space rogue? I mean, come on. Who doesn't want to see that?
The selection of Lord and Miller is an interesting one for reasons beyond awesomeness, however; it suggests that a shift for the project towards a more comedic tone, which is likely something that will reassure longtime fans of the franchise after the relative lack of humor in George Lucas' prequel trilogy.
Solo was, after all, as loved for his comedy as his derring-do in the original movie; just ask fans for their favorite lines from the original movie, and chances are, it's something that Harrison Ford delivered with trademark dryness.
With Star Wars: The Force Awakens (and what little we know about Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One) looking more and more like Star Wars as a whole is taking its lead from the original trilogy rather than anything that followed, it's not too surprising that we'd see a movie accentuate the comedy in the series' DNA sooner rather than later. (That said, Lord and Miller aren't writing the script; that job falls to Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan. Here's hoping they bring the funny.)
The addition of Miller and Lord to the movie â€" which is scheduled to open May 2018 â€" does raise some questions about their many other projects: what does this mean for their stewardship of Warners' Lego franchise, or their involvement in both Sony's animated Spider-Man movie or Warners' live-action Flash movie? Will their involvement in The Lego Batman Movie be limited because they'll be prepping Star Wars? Weren't they supposed to be linked to Sony's revived Ghostbusters franchise?
Looking at that list, you have to wonder whether they said yes to Star Wars in order to complete some wondrous nerd bingo card: Marvel, DC, Ghostbusters, Lego and Star Wars? All it needs is some Star Trek and they've done it all. It's possible that they'll be able to juggle everything due to some impressive time management and working ahead, but equally, don't be surprised to see attention drift away from other projects should Star Wars prove too time consuming.
There are other concerns that come from the news that fans might find themselves more consumed with, however. Do we really need a young Han Solo movie, for one? (As has been pointed out on Twitter already, the prequels were essentially three "young Darth Vader" movies, and look how they went over.) And, perhaps more importantly, who today can play a convincing young Harrison Ford?
