It's easy to understand why Terminator: Genisys and Magic Mike XXL might be feeling angry with Pixar's Inside Out and Universal's Jurassic World.
Inside Out and Jurassic World pulled ahead of the two new films Thursday to win the North American box office race with $7.7 million and $6.9 million, respectively, raising the distinct possibility that they will dominate Fourth of July weekend ahead of the new entries (Inside Out is tipped to take the crown).
Since opening Wednesday, both Genisys and Magic Mike XXL have done less business than expected, although Genisys clearly has far more at stake, considering its $155 million production budget and ambitions of relaunching the storied franchise.
Genisys placed No. 3 Thursday with $6.5 million for a two-day total of $15.5 million for Paramount and David Ellison's Skydance, a meek start. (Ellison spearheaded acquiring the rights to the Terminator franchise.) The movie, which will be playing in 60 foreign markets this weekend, is faring better overseas, grossing $28 million so far.
In Russia on Thursday it opened to $2.5 million, 366 percent head of Mission: Impossible â" Ghost Protocol. And it paced 8 percent ahead of Ghost Protocol in South Korea with $1.8 million.
Alan Taylor directed Genisys, with Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his role as a Terminator. He stars opposite Emilia Clarke, who plays John Connor's mother, Sarah, and Jason Clarke, who plays John Connor. Jai Courtney and J.K. Simmons co-star. This time out, John Connor sends Kyle Reese (Courtney) back in time to protect his mother, but things soon go awry.
Heading into the holiday, Paramount counted on Genisys hitting $55 million for the five days domestically, but it won't get there after earning poor reviews and a B+ CinemaScore. Early estimates show it coming in at around $41 million.
Magic Mike XXL is likewise doing less business than expected, but cost a mere $14.8 million to make. The R-rated comedy grossed $5.7 million Thursday to place No. 4, putting its two-day total at $15 million for a projected five day gross in the mid- to high-$30 million range. The sequel had won Wednesday, thanks to fans rushing out to see the movie, but tumbled 38 percent from Wednesday to Thursday (in comparison, Genisys fell 28 percent).
Magic MIke XXL, the sequel to Steven Soderbergh's sleeper hit, has fared better with critics and moviegoers, who gave it an A- CinemaScore.
The sequel was made this time without Matthew McConaughey, who played an undeniable role in turning Magic Mike into a sleeper hit in summer 2012 after the film opened to $39.1 million. But Channing Tatum, himself a popular star and whose early career as a male stripper inspired the film series, did return, alongside Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello. Gregory Jacobs directed.
Through Thursday, Inside Out has earned $216 domestically, while Jurassic World crossed a massive $527 million. On Friday, Jurassic World is likely to overtake The Dark Knight ($534.9 million) to become the fourth top-grossing film of all time in North America, not accounting for inflation.
