Why do studios even bother, at this point? Every year they try to give Comic Con attendees exclusive first looks at trailers without releasing them online, and every year someone sneaks their out their phone and records it to leak it online. Wouldnât it be easier to, I donât know, just make the trailer available?
Regardless, while the world was busy freaking out over the new Dawn of Justice trailer (myself included) Warner Bros. and DC thought they could sneak this one past us. Though itâs still well over a year away, we got our first look at Suicide Squad, thanks to some stealth cell phone camera action.
I got to say, for being a grainy, unofficial release, my excitement couldnât get be any higher.
For those not in the know, Suicide Squad follows a team of jailed supervillains, forced to perform deadly missions in exchange for time off their sentence. Itâs a risky move on behalf of Warner Bros. and DC; centering a movie around villains in a universe full of superheroes might backfire terribly. However, things are looking like they just might work out, if this trailer is any indication.
Beyond being a movie about villains, this film is notable for the cinematic debut of Batman villainess Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), the Jokerâs on again, off again, on again lover and partner in crime. Additionally, we get the first appearance of the Clown Prince of Crime himself in the new DC cinematic universe that was kicked off by 2013âs Man of Steel, this time played by Academy Award winner Jared Leto.
While the casting of Leto left many fans with a bad taste in their mouths, this trailer might do wonders to warm their cold shoulders. We donât see him until the end, but at hearing his notorious laugh, chills ran down my spine.
We also get few more looks at Ben Affleckâs Batman in action, and a glimpse a Will Smithâs Deadshot, as well as Viola Davis as the squadâs overseer, Amanda Waller. A particularly creepy version of âI Started A Jokeâ plays in the background as we meet other well-known baddies such as Killer Croc and Captain Boomerang.
As I said, this is an unofficial trailer, bootlegged from the audience at Comic Con. The quality ainât so hot, but itâs worth a watch. Itâll most likely be taken down post haste, so catch it while you can.
