The spin-off to 'Despicable Me' earned $115.2 million on its debut weekend, making it the second-biggest opening for an animated movie.
"" rocked this weekend's box office, earning an estimated $115.2 million on its debut weekend. It marks the second-biggest opening for an animated movie behind "" which grossed $121.6 million on its opening in 2007 and ahead of "" which opened to $110.3 million.
Not only be successful in domestic theaters, but the spin-off to "" also grossed big internationally earning around $124.3 million in 56 territories for an international total of $280.5 million. The movie's worldwide estimate is $395.7 million.
Universal domestic distribution chief, Nick Carpou, said that the movie was very lovable for audiences at any age. "Audiences of all ages, and especially kids and families, just love these characters, and we had a tremendous marketing and merchandising effort," he said. "We have now opened three movies this year to over $100 million - 'Minions', '' and '' - something no other studio has done in history."
On the second place was the mega-blockb uster, "Jurassic World", which garnered another $18.1 million on its fifth weekend for a domestic total of $590.7 million. When the movie earns $600 million some time next week, it will become the fourth film in history to cross the $600 million after "" ($760.5 million), "" ($658.7 million) and "" ($623.4 million).
"Jurassic World" 's rival, "", earned approximately $17.1 million from 3,644 theaters for a domestic total of $283.6 million, placing third in this weekend's box office. Following "Inside Out" was " which earned around $13.7 million from 3,783 theaters and horror movie "" which nabbed an estimated $10 million domestically.
